The Kankakee Area YMCA is more than a fitness center – it’s a community-driven organization dedicated to helping individuals and families grow stronger in spirit, mind, and body. Rooted in a mission to put Christian principles into practice, the Y brings people together from all walks of life in a welcoming environment focused on health, connection, and personal growth. Through a wide range of programs and services, the Y empowers members to build healthy habits, form meaningful relationships, and create lasting positive change in their lives and the community.
From youth development programs to wellness programs and community outreach, the YMCA is committed to supporting people at every stage of life. Children and teens gain confidence, skills, and lifelong values, while families and individuals find opportunities to stay active, connected, and balanced. Guided by a strong sense of social responsibility, the Y works to ensure everyone has access to its programs – regardless of financial circumstances – thanks to the generosity of donors, volunteers, and community partners who help make its impact possible.
The YMCA was founded in London, England in 1844 as a strong moral and value-based organization that would increasingly meet the needs of a growing society. In Kankakee, the YMCA was organized fifty years later in 1894.
Since then, the Kankakee Area YMCA has responded to the ever-increasing needs of the surrounding communities. To address the challenges, which often accompany population growth, the Kankakee Area YMCA has continually developed programs and facilities which meet human needs and potential. The YMCA has accepted the challenge to enhance the quality of life for all persons within Kankakee County.
At the heart of our programs is purpose. This involves instructors, coaches and group leaders capturing the magic of a teachable moment to instill enduring, core values that shape character and self-esteem. Lived-out acts demonstrating positive values by principled adults have long-term positive results on the children witnessing and receiving the values. This is achieved when staff and volunteers work together with this shared vision.
